Ghana, officially named the Republic of Ghana, is a country located in West Africa. It spans the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean in the south. The country has 16 regions, with many different tribes and languages. Ghana was the first country to gain independence in sub-Saharan Africa post-colonialism. It became independent on March 6, 1957. Ghana was ranked as Africa’s most peaceful country by the global peace index. Lake Volta, in the Volta region of the country, is the world’s largest man-made lake.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive In Ghana

Once you have arrived at Kotoka International airport you will go through all formalities and after you have come out from the immigration you will be met by a guide. Should it be that your flight arrives at night there will be snacks waiting to fill any stomach which is empty. We will get on our bus and drive straight to our hotel for the night. We would not spend much time on briefings and allow you to check in and settle in for the night. We will have welcome drinks in the evening where we get to meet our in-country trip leaders as well as everyone on this trip with us.

Day 2: Explore Accra

We will spend the entire day exploring Accra. We will visit the Independence Square, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum which is the final resting place of the first president of Ghana. We will also visit the Makola market. We will have a tour of the historical Jamestown. We will have lunch and proceed to W.E.B Du Bois Memorial Center which is a Pan-African Culture  and research facility. We will also learn about the American sociologist, socialist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author, writer and editor Du Bois

Day 3: Transfer to project site

Shortly after breakfast, we will be transferred to our project site or community. Upon arrival there will be a welcome ceremony to welcome us into the community. Afterwards there will be an incountry induction to help you understand what to expect in the next few days.

Day 4: Project

Full day on a project or volunteering site.

Day 5: Workshop in the morning/African Naming Ceremony

Workshop in the morning – workshop could be bead making, mask making, batik tye & dye, African drum and dance, cooking workshop etc. In the afternoon after lunch we will experience an African naming ceremony. If you are of African ancestry you may opt to participate and get your African name.

Day 6: Travel to Cape Coast or via Assin Manso

We will connect to history today. We will visit the Cape Coast and Elmina Castle enroute Assin Manso Slave Market which is the last place the slaves had their final bath before they were shipped to the unknown world from the slave dungeons. From here we will proceed to Cape Coast where we visit the slave dungeons and the ‘door of return’. We will check in our accommodation before dark and also have an evening review of the day and moments of reflections.

Day 7: Travel to Emina via Kakum Canopy Walk and Rainforest

We will go on the next step of our journey. We will proceed to Kakum National Park, one of the few existing canopies walkways in the world. We will visit the canopy walk and after the tour at the rainforest we head to Elmina, Ghana’s top most historical destination.  In Elmina we will visit the Elmina slave dungeon, the oldest European building in existence below the Sahara,  the fort Jago, and the salt mining village. Later in the day we will go for a cruise tour on the Benya mangroves and enjoy the skyline of Elmina, Ghana’s top most historical town. In the evening we will witness an African drum and dance performance with fireworks and acrobatics.

Day 8: Project day in the morning.

Day 9: Workshop/Farewell

 Workshop in the morning – workshop could be bead making, mask making, batik tye & dye, african drum and dance, cooking workshop etc. Later in the day there will be a farewell ceremony. In the evening we will have a buffet dinner and congratulate ourselves for taking this impactful journey.

Day 10: Depart

Depart Home – Airport. Based on your departure time, we will drop you off in time so you can catch your flight without stress

We will connect to history today. Learn about the village that was built on water and the tribe that lives there. Then spend the rest f your afternoon relaxing at the beach

Excursions in the project region. For example, if we are in Volta we can climb Afadjato or go to the falls. Do a picnic lunch at the falls, take a swim and cool off
